Grow for Noosa

Help us grow a vibrant and sustainable food future in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve.

Noosa is renowned for its world-class food and dining culture that celebrates locally grown, seasonal produce.

In the face of a changing climate and global economic events impacting supply chains, food security and resilience is paramount in securing a strong food future for our region. Today, a new breed of regenerative farmers are taking up the tools and giving rise to a new collective vision for our future: to create a productive, regenerative agriculture economy in the Noosa region.

Numerous groups support this vision including Country Noosa, Permaculture Noosa, Tourism Noosa, Slow Food Noosa, Food Agriculture Network (FAN), NBRF, and Noosa Landcare. This strong engagement is in response to growing concern around local issues linked to agriculture, such as the need for regenerative agriculture practices, silt washing into the rivers from poor agriculture practices, and value chain initiatives to keep local food security and produce economically viable.

What we’re doing

Momentum is building for this new future. In 2019, Country Noosa together with UniSC and supported by grant funding from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, conducted a study of the Noosa region’s farming practices. The Rural Enterprise Plan revealed real opportunities to develop an environmentally and economically sustainable plan for the Noosa Hinterland.

In 2022, the NBRF hosted a series of community workshops followed by a stakeholder symposium to capture the collective needs of the local agriculture community. Those needs were grouped into categories of supply, demand, and connectivity:

  • Increase demand for local produce and organisation of sustainable distribution channels.
  • Empower farmers and growers to take up sustainable and regenerative farming models.
  • Enhance community nutrition and reduce regional food miles by growing and eating more local, seasonal produce.
  • Attract more farmers to the region through facilitating land/farmer agreements to increase value streams.

The NBRF looks to continue working together to achieve the community’s vision for a productive and regenerative agriculture economy in the Noosa region. In November 2022, we directed proceeds from our annual Noosa Biosphere Gala to kickstart the Grow for Noosa Fund and raise awareness of our focus to support new initiatives aimed at building a resilient food future.
