Held on Wednesday 9 September 2026 at the beautiful Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens, Tanawah, this award-winning event brings together students, educators, community members and environmental organisations to showcase innovative projects that help care for Country and create a more sustainable future.
Whether you’d like to volunteer, support the event, or simply experience the conference, everyone is welcome to be part of this inspiring day and witness the creativity, passion and leadership of young people making a positive difference in their communities.
2026 Theme: From Dusk to Dawn – Stories of the Night
This year’s theme invites students to explore the fascinating world that comes alive after sunset.
From First Nations sky stories and Indigenous knowledge to nocturnal wildlife, astronomy and environmental science, students will investigate the connections between sky, Country and the living world. They’ll discover how plants, animals and ecosystems change after dark, why darkness is essential for healthy environments, and how protecting our night skies benefits both wildlife and people.
Throughout the conference, students will share projects inspired by questions including:
- Who moves, sings or blooms in the dark?
- Why are the unseen processes of the night important?
- How do the stars and moon guide life on Earth?
- Why does protecting our dark skies matter for future generations?
The conference encourages curiosity, collaboration and meaningful environmental action while strengthening connections to Country through partnerships with local Traditional Custodians and Elders.
Designed primarily for Years 5–8 students, the Kids in Action program empowers young people to take responsibility for their own learning by planning and delivering environmental projects that make a real impact.
