What’s Brewing in the Dark: Warming Sands & Sea Turtles

A free, informal science night exploring sea turtle research, warming sands and conservation, featuring leading scientists and real-world insights from the Sunshine Coast.

Join us for What’s Brewing in the Dark: Warming Sands & Sea Turtles, an engaging evening of science talks bringing coastal and marine research to life.

Hosted in a relaxed setting at Blackflag Brewing, this event brings together leading researchers and practitioners working at the forefront of sea turtle conservation and climate science.

You’ll hear from a diverse panel of speakers sharing insights into the challenges facing turtle populations and the science guiding their protection:

  • Dr Emily Webster (TropWATER, James Cook University) will present virtually on the search for climate refugia and what the future may hold for loggerhead turtle nesting beaches
  • Luna Vieira (James Cook University) will explore how climate trends translate into sand temperatures and nesting conditions, highlighting warming patterns along the Queensland coast
  • Kate Hofmeister (Sunshine Coast Council) will share how research informs real-world management and policy for threatened species
  • Ebony King will discuss research into light impacts on hatchlings and her work with the TurtleCare citizen science program

Together, these talks offer a compelling look at how climate change is impacting marine ecosystems and the innovative approaches being used to protect them.

These events are designed to be informal, engaging and accessible, offering a chance to connect with scientists, ask questions and learn more about what’s happening in your own backyard. Bring a friend, grab a drink and enjoy a great night of local science.
