Charlotte Birkmanis

Specialist Advisor

Dr Charlotte Birkmanis bridges the gap between research, philanthropy and the public as an experienced Director and Advisor to philanthropists, non-profit and research organisations. As the inaugural Director of a philanthropic foundation, she is responsible for assessing funding applications and managing multi-million dollar portfolios. Her unique blend of academic expertise and experience as a consultant and project manager on marine renewable energy and development projects make her an ideal advisor for philanthropic efforts focused on conservation and sustainability.

With 15+ years of experience in communication and research, Charlotte wears many hats – Shark biologist, marine ecologist, Superstar of STEM, podcast, radio and TV host, MC, author, Australian STEM Ambassador, as well as state and national representative on various scientific committees. She is also an award-winning scientist and communicator featured on various platforms (e.g. BBC, ABC, Forbes, World Fringe Festival, TEDx, UNESCO, Global Challenges Champion, International Science Council).

As a wildlife science communicator with degrees in ecology (with Distinction), international and global Studies, mandarin chinese, biomechanics and shark ecology (Honours first class), she brings a depth of skills to the role. Known as the ‘PR Manager’ for sharks and our ocean, her research focuses on shark behaviour and movement, exploring where sharks are, why they are there, and how their numbers change over time. As a postdoctoral researcher, she is now investigating if sharks can help us heal, combining her passion for ocean conservation with cutting-edge scientific research.
